The new Key Stage 2 English grammar, punctuation and spelling test will assess elements of levels 3-5 & level 6 of the current National Curriculum for English, as defined in the test framework. There are two test papers in the new spelling, punctuation and grammar test for the Levels 3-5 test and three test papers in the Level 6 test . The main paper (Paper 1) is a test of grammar and punctuation. This is a 45-minute test and requires pupils to answer approximately 46 questions. For some questions pupils must supply up to four correct answers in order to secure one mark. This is a test not only of knowledge but also of accuracy. The smaller paper (Paper 2) is the spelling paper and consists of 20 sentences, each with a missing word. The teacher reads out the sentence and the pupil writes down the word. The extended task is only in the Level 6 test and assesses the pupil’s ability to produce a relevant text with a variety of sentence structures, a range of punctuation marks and good use of vocabulary.
